The K.I.D.S. Approach
A clearer way
to move forward.
Knowledge. Insight. Direction. Strategy.
Four principles. One priority: children’s welfare. A structured way of thinking about difficult family situations, from understanding the framework to preparing your next step.
A way to structure your thinking, not a guarantee of any court outcome. Revisit each stage as circumstances change.
Knowledge
Understand the framework.
Start with reliable information. Learn about the processes relevant to your circumstances, parental responsibility and how children’s welfare is considered. Understanding the framework can help you ask better questions and recognise where qualified legal advice is needed.
Insight
Understand the circumstances.
Look carefully at the information available. Organise timelines and relevant documents, consider different perspectives and separate what is known from what is assumed. Recognise safeguarding concerns, including domestic abuse and coercive control. A child’s wishes and experiences deserve careful attention.
Direction
Understand the objective.
Begin with the child’s individual needs and safety. Think about what a realistic, constructive way forward could look like and which routes may be appropriate. Agreement, professional support and court processes have different roles; the right route depends on the circumstances.
Strategy
Understand the next steps.
Turn understanding into careful preparation. Keep information organised, note relevant deadlines and communicate clearly where it is safe to do so. Review your next steps as circumstances change. Seek qualified professional assistance when you need advice about your situation.
The principle behind every step
